South Carolina begins a new dynasty in college basketball

It’s ironic that South Carolina won the national championship at the expense of Connecticut. A new dynasty has taken the throne from the old.

Pushnaija has gathered that in winning its second championship in six years, the team was ecstatic. South Carolina defeated Connecticut on Sunday, handing the Huskies their first loss in 12 national championship games. Also, the amazing performance left little doubt that South Carolina had won the championship rather than that UConn University of Connecticut) had lost the championship.

Aliyah Boston recorded what has become her signature performance scoring 11 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. South Carolina had 21 offensive rebounds, which was three fewer than the total number of offensive rebounds UConn had.

Furthermore, Destanni Henderson put on the best performance of her life in her final college game, scoring a career-high 26 points while also limiting Paige Bueckers’s scoring opportunities. The final result was 64-49, which wasn’t even close to the scoreline indicated.

‘UConn is not only a fantastic squad, but they also have a fantastic tradition. They are a part of the history of our women’s basketball programme. That’s something you can’t really take away from them’, coach Dawn Staley stated. ‘However, it was divinely ordained for us to be champions today. We were not going to take no for an answer,’ she added.

If not for the tournament being cancelled in 2020, when South Carolina was 32-1 and expected to be the overall No. 1 seed, and last-second misses in last year’s national semifinal, this could be three in a row for the Gamecocks. As things stand, they are poised to repeat the entire process next year.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar states that Lebron should be ashamed of how he handled COVID-19

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the legendary centre for the Los Angeles Lakers, took aim at LeBron James on Sunday afternoon while attending an NBA ceremony. Abdul-Jabbar, who has already attacked James for his handling of the COVID-19 outbreak, has reiterated his discontent.

In addition to James’ support for Andrew Wiggins earlier in the season, Abdul-Jabbar expressed frustration with James for posting a meme on Instagram that compared COVID-19 to the flu or a common cold. While Abdul-Jabbar is discontent with the way LeBron has handled this matter, he would welcome the opportunity to sit down with him and discuss their respective activism efforts.

‘It’s not something I mind doing if he’s willing to put in the effort. The things he’s done that have grabbed all of our attention are things I like about him. Is it appropriate to send an entire school to college? Wow. That is just wonderful. To be commended for his thoughtfulness and willingness to back it up with his money is an understatement,’ Abdul Jabbar said.

As a result, I’m not casting aspersions. I just hope he wouldn’t do that because, you know, some of the things he’s done should make him feel ashamed of himself. Just to clarify, that’s where I’m coming from’, Jabbar added.

Another issue Abdul-Jabbar had was when LeBron James was fined $15,000 by the NBA in November for participating in a celebration that the league deemed vulgar.

Five unbeaten NBA records set by individual players

Five unbeaten NBA records set by individual players

Everybody knows a handful of NBA teams who made history with their incredible achievements throughout the league. But what about individual players who have put up video game numbers due to their insane skills on the court? Stop thinking about LeBron James or Michael Jordan for a while as Pushnaija brings you a list of five unbeaten records set by NBA players:

Most points in a single game: 100

Wilt Chamberlain has posted the highest points scored by a player in a single game when his team, the Philadelphia Warriors, battled the New York Knicks in 1962. The Warriors won 169-147 with Chamberlain responsible for scoring 100 of the team’s total score.

After the first half of that game, Chamberlain already scored 41 points. Despite the defence made by the Knicks against him, he managed to score as many points as possible until the end of regulation. He managed to beat his own career-high of 78 points.

Most points in a single quarter: 37

The Golden State Warriors are one of those game-changing teams that graced any NBA court over the past decade. The team made itself known for its high 3-point scoring percentage led by their ace players Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. The outside shooting tactic proved extremely useful for the Warriors, but Thompson took it up a notch in their game against the Sacramento Kings in 2015.

In the third quarter of that match, Thompson’s hands were on fire as he managed to nail every single one of his 13 field goal attempts, contributing 37 out of the Warrior’s 41 points in that quarter alone.

Youngest MVP: Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose is one of the most promising young players in the NBA. Since he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 2008, he began posting impressive numbers to make his team a threat to the LeBron James-led Miami Heat. He also won Rookie of the Year and made two All-Star appearances during his stint with the Bulls.

However, the icing on Rose’s cake came in 2011 when he was awarded the Most Valuable Player of that season. To date, he is the youngest player to have received that award at 22 years old.

Oldest MVP: Karl Malone

Karl Malone is one of the players Utah Jazz fans are proud of. For most of his career he played for the Jazz and even won two MVPs while being part of the team. Considering that he was drafted by Utah in 1985 and got his second MVP award in 1999, he is the oldest NBA player to have gotten that accolade at the age of 35.

Malone was known to have led the Jazz to two consecutive NBA finals appearances in 1997 and 1998, only to be beaten both times by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

Most assists in an entire career: 15,806

Points aren’t the only stats listed by NBA officials. Since basketball is a team sport, assists are just as important to winning games. The highest number of assists made by a single NBA player in his entire career is 15,806 by John Stockton of the Utah Jazz. Stockton played in the NBA from 1984 to 2003, allowing him to support his teammates as many times as he can.

Apparently, this record won’t be beaten soon, given that the second-highest career assist record is set at 12,091 by Jason Kidd, a sizable margin compared to Stockton’s number. Also, did you know that Stockton also holds the record for the most career steals in the NBA at 3,264?

Hard work and determination will get you far in life, just like how these NBA players made it to the record books through their impressive ball-handling and team play. Many seasons later and it looks like these records won’t be broken soon. Keep on looking forward to every season and see which player will put up great stats for that year.

Five of the most wholesome moments in sports history

Five of the most wholesome moments in sports history

When you watch sports on TV, most of the time you’d see athletes or teams try to outplay each other in the best way possible. Rarely do you find competitors show genuine respect towards their opponents aside from the occasional handshakes or hugs after a game. You can watch clips of them online, but Pushnaija is here to give you a list of five of the most wholesome moments in sports history:

Alistair Brownlee helps his brother finish the World Triathlon Series

Brothers Alistair and Johnny Brownlee are British teammates competing in the World Triathlon Series in 2016. Unfortunately, in the last kilometre of the run, the heat and exhaustion takes its toll on Johnny’s body and nearly faints. Alistair, who was in the lead, chose to go back to his brother and join him in crossing the finish line. Johnny finished second place and Alistair finished third.

Nikki Hamblin accompanies Abbey D’Agostino to the finish line

Nikki Hamblin and Abbey D’Agostino are middle distance runners representing New Zealand and the United States, respectively. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, the two runners were neck-and-neck, and both of them fell. D’Agostino suffered a leg injury from the incident, but Hamblin chose not to finish the race just yet. She helped D’Agostino up and crossed the finish line with her.

This moment captured the attention of sports media all over the world, and Hamblin was awarded the Rio 2016 Fair Play Award because of it.

Danny Vukovic rescues an injured seagull on the field

During a football match between Sydney FC and Melbourne City, defender Sebastian Ryall was going for a clearing pass when the ball hit a low-flying seagull. The bird fell on the field and caused confusion among the players until finally, Ryall’s teammate Danny Vukovic signalled a referee to pause the match.

Vukovic carried the injured bird to the side of the field to be treated, and everything seemed okay when it was seen being stroked by the ground staff.

Rafael Nadal stops a match to help a mother find her daughter

Tennis star Rafael Nadal was playing a doubles match when he noticed a commotion coming from the audience. Apparently, a mother was frantically looking for her lost child. He stopped playing and allowed other members of the audience to look for the girl. Eventually, the girl was found, reuniting with her mother in tears.

Mutaz Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi share the Olympic gold medal

Mutaz Barshim from Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy are high jump rivals who crossed paths with each other in the 2020 Olympics. In the final round, both Barshim and Tamberi reached a height of 2.37 metres. This tie has prompted the official to have both of them do a ‘jump-off’. However, Tamberi suggested that both he and Barshim get a gold medal instead since they just cannot outperform each other.

When the official said that it was possible to have both Tamberi and Barshim win the gold medal, the Italian just looked at his rival, shook hands and hugged. Both Qatar and Italy get one gold medal in their tallies.

Showing respect and compassion towards your rivals will earn you the same in return, which is why sportsmanship is an important virtue of an athlete. Taking a look at the five moments on this list will make you think that it’s not just the desire to win that makes an athlete great. Sometimes, it’s the moments of pure humanity that gets an athlete written in the books of sports history.

NBA: Raptors claim their 8th straight win by defeating the Rockets

The Toronto Raptors beat the Houston Rockets 139-120 to extend their winning streak to eight games. Gary Trent Jr. and Pascal Siakam each scored 72 points for the Raptors.

Despite Siakam’s foul trouble late in the fourth quarter, Trent had a season-high 42 points, and Trent had a season-high 30. Siakam and Trent each made six 3-pointers, and each got four assists. Trent also had five thefts on the night.

There was no one in double figures until the end of the third quarter when Chris Boucher made two free throws to put him there at the 1:08 mark. Dalano Banton and OG Anunoby contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Six Rockets scored in double digits, led by Kevin Porter Jr.’s 30 points and eight assists. Christian Wood had 17 points and 11 rebounds for his 26th double-double, while Garrison Mathews had 19. Jalen Green had 18 points and made 3 of 6 three-pointers.

Green’s dunk at the 6:01 mark of the first quarter gave Houston a 22-12 lead. During the Raptors’ 20-8 surge to the lead, Trent scored 14 points.

A Toronto full-court press stunned Houston as the Raptors went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 32-30 after Trent’s backcourt steal and layup. Siakam’s second-quarter blitz gave Trent 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and three three-pointers.

The Raptors had a 12-point advantage at the end of the second quarter thanks to Siakam, who made 9 of 10 shots from the field. During the first quarter, Houston shot 76.2% from the field and 6 of 9 from beyond the arc, but couldn’t keep up the pace in the second quarter. With 6:29 remaining in the first half, the Rockets fell behind 50-49 on a Siakam driving bank shot.

With the score at 63-53 after three points, he added another three-pointer, an inbounds pass, and a fadeaway. The Raptors’ lead grew to 12 points on Trent’s next three-pointer, and Siakam’s fadeaway capped the Raptors’ first-half scoring.

NBA Finals rematch: The Suns thrash the Bucks

The Phoenix Suns defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 131-107 in a repeat of last season’s NBA Finals, led by Deandre Ayton’s 27 points and Chris Paul’s 17 points and a season-high 19 assists.

The Suns, who had won 15 of their previous 16 games, were led by Mikal Bridges’ 18 points. Paul scored 17 points to reach his 500th career double-double.

Last year’s dramatic Finals saw Milwaukee overcome Phoenix in six games. Despite a 2-0 start by the Suns, the Bucks went on a four-game winning streak after that. Milwaukee’s four-game winning streak was snapped when the Bucks fell to their third loss in 11 games despite having 21 points apiece from Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton.

Despite becoming MVP of the NBA Finals, Giannis Antetokounmpo had a total of 18 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Phoenix’s Devin Booker finished with 17 points and seven assists, although he only hit six of his 19 shots from the field. With 15 points and eight rebounds from Cameron Johnson, the Suns defeated Milwaukee for the sixth time in the previous seven meetings during the regular season.

While shooting 56.7% from the field and 9 of 30 from 3-point range, the Suns’ JaVale McGee had 12 points and Jae Crowder had 10 points and eight rebounds to lead the way.

Bucks forward Bobby Portis scored 11 points and grabbed nine boards in a 45.5% shooting performance with a 10 of 38 mark from the three-point line. After fracturing the fourth metacarpal on his right hand, Milwaukee’s Pat Connaughton was forced to leave the game.

In the third quarter, the Suns outscored the Bucks 33-21 to build a 97-77 lead at halftime.

Sports highlights for January 2022

Pushnaija: Sports highlights for January 2022

Pushnaija is one of the most reliable news websites that focuses on covering the sports industry. As we cover global news starting this 2022, we have seen busy and exciting tournaments and matches between popular sports teams. Take a look at the sports highlights for January 2022 below:

Ram’s Stafford becomes a playoff hero during the NFL Conference Championship

Matthew Stafford requested to be traded by the Detroit Lions after not scoring a win in playoff games in 12 years. After becoming an official Ram member, Stafford faced a 10-point deficit during the 4th quarter of the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 30. But the game was not finished there.

After passing 121 yards and scoring a touchdown in the final game, Stafford had the largest 4th quarter comeback in the history of the conference championship. It was reported that Stafford said he wanted to take the opportunity to make big-time plays in the 4th quarter against great teams. In 2 weeks, the Los Angeles Rams will compete for the Super Bowl.

In their game against San Francisco, Stafford connected twice in the end zone with his favourite target, Cooper Kupp, Calvin Johnson and Odell Beckham Jr. According to Spotrac, these players exemplify Ram’s all-in attitude.

Joe Burrow bounces back after recovering from his right knee reconstruction

It was reported that Joe Burrow was in the early stages of his recovery from his right knee reconstruction in February 2021. He was eventually seen throwing and delivering passes to Cincinnati Bengals’ equipment staffers and trainers. However, the status of his performance for the following season ended with the Bengals team coming off at 4-11-1.

Thanks to the overtime upset against the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs, Bengals and Burrow are headed to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1988. While Cincinnati’s defence had its paws all over their victory over Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is still crucial down the stretch as he faces Burrow.

When the Bengals took over the midfield, Burrow mixed handoffs and had a couple of short throws to move. The only negative yardage play in their final possessions was a slide by Burrow in the backfield. However, it turns out that it was intentional to set up the winning field goal.

It is undeniable that every team should depend on its quarterback but that is not the case in the Bengals since they have been trusting Burrow during the past 5 wins. Now, Burrow tallied 38.8 pass attempts per game versus his 31.1 attempts last season.

Cincy Stiffens strike the Red Zone twice

The common utterance, lightning can strike twice was proven right by Patrick Mahomes. With 9 seconds left in the first half of the game, the Chiefs were only a yard away from their 4th touchdown. That would have stretched their lead to 3 scores before they had the 2nd half kickoff.

However, the Bengals stood their ground which made Mahomes throw a swing pass to Tyreek Hill. Hill then stopped short of the goal line. This resulted in Cincinnati clawing back in the 2nd half and forcing 5 punts and an interception. During the 14-play drive, the Chiefs bent the Bengals but failed to break them.

Mahomes led Kansas City down to 5-yard for the last 90 seconds made the viewers raise an authentic question of whether the Bengals let them score. But after the Bengals made their impressive stand during the 1st half, the answer was a huge no.

On the 1st down, Jerick McKinnon managed to rush for one yard before Cincinnati spent its final timeout. After that, Sam Hubbard wrapped up Mahones via a 5-yard sack on the 2nd down of the game. On the 3rd down, Hubbard got the home again which made the Chiefs settle for a field goal instead.

49ers numbered Jimmy Garoppolo’s days in Bay Area

When the 49ers drafted Trey Lance, they made it clear to the rest of the league that Jimmy Garoppolo’s days in the Bay Area are now numbered. The good news is that Garoppolo did not lose his grip on the start of the season since his stats indicate that a change can still be made.

After 3 playoffs, Garoppolo managed to complete 58.1% of his passes for 555 yards, 3 interceptions and 2 touchdowns. This is the same day when the 49ers’ potent game fell flat in 20 carries for 50 yards. Unfortunately, Jimmy G can’t come to the rescue this time.

So this time, San Francisco should probably move Lance on a serious draft capital. Garoppolo, on the other hand, still carries a cap hit of over $25 million before January 2022 comes to an end. This is his final year under contract and that means he can now be traded or released while the 49ers see what they have got in Lance.

The NFL’s biggest game still lies ahead of the viewers but the off seasons will come soon. Garoppolo will join the growing list of veteran NFL quarterbacks who many fans expect to have a new home this 2022.

49ers sink in NFC championship due to major mistakes

Jaquiski Tartt made game-winning baskets and interceptions during his games when he was in high school and college. Apparently, it is not enough to make the San Francisco 49ers get their team back to the Super Bowl this season.

Tartt dropped an interception as the Niners hung on to a 17-14 lead during the NFC championship game’s 4th quarter last Sunday against Los Angeles Rams. He was one of the many players of San Francisco who was unable to make a goal in the final 15 minutes. The 20-17 loss denied the 49ers their 2nd Super Bowl trip within 3 years.

In an interview, Tart said that he was in practice all week and caught everything that came his way. For 6 ¾ games, the 49ers dominated the NFC West rival but it came to an end during their 4th quarter. At first, they had a 17-7 lead but when they entered the final 15 minutes, the Rams scored 13 straight points.

Aside from Tartt’s failure to pick, coach Kyle Shanahan decided not to opt for Rams territory. As a result, they fell short on 2 previous yardage plays and Jimmy G got intercepted on his final drive.

In an interview, Shanahan said that both teams had their chances and he thought that they had the other one on the ropes so they gave them a chance. But it turns out that if you give them too many chances, they are going to make it eventually.

Rams coach Sean McVay decided to give Shanahan a gift by giving the 3rd play but replays have shown that the Niners lost the ball after being down by contact. This left the Rams with no timeouts but the team did not seize the momentum.

Stafford connected with Odell Beckham Jr. for a 29-yard completion on the next play when Jimmie Ward was flagged for unnecessary roughness. After 7 plays later, Matt Gay tied the game at 17 with a 40-yard field goal.

The Niners had one final chance to win or tie after Gay’s 2nd field goal gave the Rams the lead. On 3rd-and-13 from the Niners’ 22, Garoppolo was pressured by Aaron Donald before being intercepted by Travin Howard. This won the Rams their second trip to the Super Bowl in four years.

Garoppolo, who completed 16 of 30 passes for 232 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception said that their game was a result of some awful execution. This made the game not work out the way they wanted it to.

After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made history last year, Los Angeles became the second franchise to host a Super Bowl in its home stadium. The Rams will meet the Cincinnati Bengals, who won the AFC championship game 27-24 in overtime over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Apart from the 4th quarter failure, the Niners failed to contain Rams All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who had 11 catches for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns. San Francisco often used single coverage on Kupp, including a 4th quarter touchdown when K’Waun Williams was beaten off the line.

On third downs, San Francisco’s defence could no longer get off the field because the Rams converted 11 of 18. The Niners were 3-5 at the halfway point of the season before winning seven of their last nine games and earning the NFC’s sixth seed in the playoffs. They beat Dallas and Green Bay on the road but lost to the Rams for the first time in 2018.

The 49ers have a lot of issues heading into the offseason, including whether or not Garoppolo will stay at quarterback. Garoppolo said that good teams should be resilient and fight through adversity to emerge stronger on the other side.

The most valuable sports team of 2021

Pushnaija: The most valuable sports team of 2021

The past year hasn’t been kind to some sports teams by most accounts. This is mainly because some seasons have been shortened, tournaments have been cancelled and most international competitions were played in empty stadiums. These are the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic’s never-ending reproduction of variants that causes spikes in the number of cases around the world.

However, not all of the reasons why some teams lose is due to external factors such as the pandemic. Some are also because of their lack of teamwork, passion and inspiration. As we look back on the highs and lows of the 2021’s sporting calendar, we can say that certain teams truly are the best. Check out some of these sports teams below:

  1. Tampa Bay Lightning

The Bolts were the defending Stanley Cup champions in 2021, thus they were in better shape than other teams. However, Tampa Bay Lightning’s 2020 title came under unusual circumstances despite lacking some key players such as the injured Nikita Kucherov. While it appeared that they would have stronger competition, Tampa persevered. They finished 16-7 in a postseason that saw Kucherov’s contentious return. This fine-tuned their salary-cap position to finish tied for the league’s eighth-best record during the regular season.

  1. Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers, like the Lightning, entered 2021 as defending champions after a shortened 2020 season. On paper, the Dodgers appeared to have even more talent this season than they did the year before. However, despite their success, the season was far from easy. Fortunately, due to some remarkable off-season acquisitions, they won 106 games and made it through the wild-card round.

Although they had beaten the Giants in a tense division series, they lost in an NLCS rematch with the eventual champion Atlanta Braves. The Los Angeles Dodgers made decisions along the way that cost them money and trust. Even so, they are still baseball’s most dominant club for most of the season and this year’s top champion in all major pro sports.

  1. Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have the finest turnaround story of 2021, beating out their Bay Area MLB colleagues and a slew of NBA competitors. It began last season when the Warriors overcame a nightmare due to the absence of Steph Curry and came close to returning to the playoffs.

Fortunately, the Warriors have found another gear this season, looking like the league’s most outstanding team in the early going. The current Warriors have a striking resemblance to the team that set an NBA record for most wins in a single season prior to the arrival of Kevin Durant.

  1. The United States Women’s Basketball

Only 3 times has the US women’s Olympic basketball team lost a game in an official competition. The most recent of these was in 1992. The United States women stormed their way to a 7th consecutive gold medal at the Summer Games in Tokyo, bringing the program’s total Olympic wins to 70. Led by WNBA stars Brittney Griner and Breanna Stewart, the Americans outscored their 6 opponents by an average of 19.3 points.

Canada defeated the USA in World Cup

After defeating the United States 2-0 in Hamilton on Sunday afternoon, January 30, the Canadian men’s national soccer team won their fifth consecutive World Cup qualifying match. During the kickoff, the temperature was -6°C, but the wind chill made it seem like minus 11°C.

In the 7th minute, Cyle Larin brought the 12,000 crowds at Tim Hortons Field to their feet by slamming a right-footed strike into the left side of the goal past American goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Larin’s goal was his 23rd as a member of the Canadian national team, beating Dwayne De Rosario’s previous mark. Milan Borjan, on the other hand, made a spectacular save in the 43rd minute, swatting aside a headed ball by American Weston McKinnie to retain the home team’s one-goal lead.

Despite having the majority of possession, the 11th-ranked Americans were unable to break down Canada’s defensive structure or keep up with the speed with which the Canadians transitioned. In extra time, Samuel Adekugbe scored on a breakaway to put the game out of reach of a helpless Turner.

Canada (6-4-0) is the only unbeaten team in the eight-team CONCACAF qualifying campaign, with 22 points after 10 games. The top three teams will receive an automatic berth in the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar starting in November.

Canada, which is currently ranked 40th, has only qualified for the FIFA World Cup once, in 1986. Canada’s next match is in El Salvador on Wednesday night.

Raptors Fred ValVleet managed to outlast the Heat

The Toronto Raptors beat the Miami Heat 124-120 in overtime on Saturday night, thanks to two 3-pointers from Fred VanVleet.

Gary Trent Jr. had 33 points, Scottie Barnes had 22, Pascal Siakam had 21 and OG Anunoby had 20 for Toronto. VanVleet scored 19 points after missing the previous two games due to right knee pain.

Toronto coach Nick Nurse stated that they hung and could have gone either way several times. VanVleet’s opening goal tied the score at 11th and with 3:05 left, Anunoby’s dunk put Toronto up for good. This made VanVleet leap long-range for a 122-117 lead.

In an interview, VanVleet said that they have been through a lot so it was good for their team to retain their cool. For the Eastern Conference-leading Heat, Jimmy Butler produced a triple-double with 37 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists.

‘It was a really competitive game with a lot of mood swings and it is going to take a lot of mental toughness during the first 3 quarters.’  Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. ‘But I think we reacted well since the 4th quarter and all the overtimes were just fantastic.’ She added.
