Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea will face each other following the international break, as the pair meet in a London derby at Wembley in Saturday’s late Premier League kick off.
Spurs may have lost three times already in the league this season, but they lie only a point behind the undefeated Blues in the standingsand retain hopes of winning that elusive title.
While they finished up before the international recess with successive away wins over Wolves and Crystal Palace to keep the heat on the three leading sides, Maurizio Sarri’s men suffered something of a setback against Everton,
While some onlookers may have been surprised by Chelsea’s undefeated start to life in the Premier League under Maurizio Sarri, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is not included in this group.
Indeed, he says the Blues have been able to thrive because they have an advantage over their opponents in that they are not involved in the Champions League, having finished a disappointing fifth in the standings last term under Antonio Conte.
“This season they are competing in the Europa League and it’s completely different to Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool or us as we’re competing in the Champions League. It’s a completely different competition,” he said.
“I am not surprised as Chelsea have an unbelievable squad and players.
This summer they invested in quality players and added to the squad. But it’s normal, they have one point more than us. It’s not surprising me that they’re doing very well.”
With rumours circulating that Sarri wants to add to his squad in January – Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar and Inter defender Milan Skriniar are two players who have been linked – he clearly feels that his side are not yet complete.
Tottenham face problems in their defence, where they will be without Davinson Sanchez, Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier.
To make matters worse in the rearguard, Jan Vertonghen has only just returned to training after a lengthy spell on the sidelines and is lacking sharpness.
Midfielder Moussa Dembele is absent, while Erik Lamela only returned from international duty on Thursday.
In contrast to their hosts, Chelsea have almost a clean bill of health before this fixture. Mateo Kovacic picked up a minor problem on international duty, which will need to be assessed.
