Perth Glory recruit Ivan Franjic has described the new squad’s depth as “scary” and is eyeing today’s game at Melbourne Victory as an opportunity to get an early break on one of the competition’s major title contenders.

Victory were sunk 2-1 by cross-town rival Melbourne City on the opening weekend, in a derby that was marred by a controversial VAR penalty that A-League boss Greg O’Rourke later admitted was wrong.

“I think it’s still early in the season. But if you win against Victory, you’ve already opened up a four-point gap on them,” Franjic said.

“So we want to be challenging for the title this year and it’s important winning these games away against big teams.

“Victory is always up there at season’s end. So it’s not going to be an easy game. But we’re ready for the challenge.”

Franjic, a Victorian product who is back in his home town for the AAMI Park clash, said the Glory players were aware there would be huge pressure for spots once the club’s injury list thinned.

Franjic said he would prefer VAR was not part of the game.

“It’s meant to come for the better, but we’re still making mistakes with it or without it,” he said.

Captain Diego Castro, defender Matt Spiranovic and boom teenager Jacob Italiano all shape as likely starters once fully fit, while veteran striker Brendon Santalab and pacy winger Chris Harold will also provide options.

“You look at the depth and it’s actually scary. All these players are quality and proven, so it’s exciting times ahead for Perth Glory,” he said.

“It keeps everyone on their toes and everyone giving 100 per cent. Because they know if you don’t perform well that someone else is there to take your spot.”

Franjic started alongside new Glory teammates Spiranovic and Jason Davidson in Australia’s defence in the first game of the 2014 World Cup against Chile.
