It’s basically scenario-based training, where players are put in situations where they need to find a way to close out the game.
It worked wonders for the Rabbitohs against St George Illawarra when Adam Reynolds slotted three field goals to win the semi-final thriller.
“Putting a name to it as brought more light to it,” injured Rabbitohs forward Jason Clark told NRL 360.
“I think we’ve done it without knowing in the past.
“I don’t think we’ve trained for three field goals in a row, but doing the same scenario three times in a row worked for us.
“It’s not always the same way each week either.
“We did one (on Monday), the boys were up by four points, three minutes to go and they just had to hold the lead. 13 on 13, no different, but they’ve just got to hold the lead and do everything possible as you do in a game: you complete, finish in the corner and build the pressure, but it can easily change if something goes wrong.”
While fans watching on from the stands chew their finger nails off, the players are able to operate in chaos thanks to the training.
“I wasn’t nervous, we’ve put the guys in scenarios and situations like that throughout the year at training and given them training to learn in those sorts of situations,” Seibold after the Dragons game.
“I was pretty comfortable and confident that if we got an opportunity, we’d be able to nail it.”
It’s a tactic that isn’t foreign to the likes of Cronulla with veteran backrower Luke Lewis saying his teammates are often put in tough situations at training.
