RICHMOND are looking to make it into their second straight grand final and keep their hopes of going back-to-back alive with a victory on Friday night.

In front of them are a tough Collingwood outfit who have earned their spot in the preliminary finals the hard way.

After losing to West Coast in the opening week, the Magpies put the Giants to the sword. The Tigers however will be well rested after demolishing Hawthorn in their first game.

The sides met twice during the 2018 season with Richmond walking away victorious on both occasions with by an average margin of victory of 35 points.

Collingwood head into Friday night’s battle as the underdogs against a rampant Richmond side, but they believe they’re every chance of causing the upset.

Teams have tried all season long to out work the Tigers, but their consistent pressure eventually gets the better of everyone.

Jeremy Howe, known for his high-flying antics, knows the Magpies have what it takes to get the better of their more fancied opponent.

“I think with Richmond, they play a real consistent brand of footy that you know what you’re going to get coming up every single time you play them,” Howe told SEN Afternoons.

“Their pressure is very good, so is ours, but I think they like to play a game of momentum and keep the ball moving with a lot of knock-ons and taps and the ball just keeps going forward.

“With that, when you do win the ball, you’ve got a wave of numbers coming up in your face as well.

“The ability to try and get a first uncontested mark and buffer that goes a long way in being able to resist the pressure coming on.

“They’re a team that continually put pressure on for four quarters, they’re relentless in that.

“We feel like we have the tools to be able to buffer that, it’s just a matter of doing it for four quarters and not three and a half because that won’t get the result.”

Dustin Martin stole the headlines in the lead up to the first preliminary final as intrigue grew over the Brownlow Medallist’s fitness.

But it’s premiership backman David Astbury who is racing the clock to overcome an illness if he’s to take part in the monster clash.

Astbury was sent home from training on Thursday and effectively quarantined from his teammates after suffering flu-like symptoms.

The Tigers are hopeful Astbury will be available to line up against Collingwood at the MCG but are unlikely to make a final call until the last minute.

First-year defender Ryan Garthwaite has been named as an emergency and looms as a likely replacement should Astbury be unable to play.

Garthwaite has played two games this season, the most recent against Essendon in round 22.

Brandon Ellis, Sam Lloyd and Ivan Soldo are the other emergencies.
