The Mercedes driver’s voice was unsteady as he started his television interviews after setting a new all-time record of six pole positions at this race, beating the legendary Jim Clark, and the 76th of his career.
“It feels like one of the best laps I’ve been able to produce,” he said. “It felt like the most pressurised lap I have ever had.
Afterwards, I was shaking through the emotion, the adrenaline rush. It was way above the limit I had ever experienced before.”
Hamilton is not only one point behind Vettel before Sunday’s race, but he was also adrift of the German, by just 0.057 seconds, after their first runs in final qualifying.
Watching Hamilton’s final lap, the sheer speed as he wrestled the car through the 190mph corners at Copse and Becketts was breathtaking. The Mercedes looked right on the edge, and Hamilton said that was no illusion.
“I had to go over the limit to get that time out of the car, which is dangerous,” he said. “You could easily have not pulled the lap together. But I am so thankful I was able to.
“I knew the fans were right there with me. Every time I went out I saw them standing up and cheering, so I knew they were wanting it and expecting it and hoping for it so the pressure was huge. You can’t imagine.
“I play my cards close to my chest pretty much all the time. I wanted it that bad and when you want something that bad and you know there are people also hoping for it and depending on you, the pressure increases.
“It was so close, the Ferraris. I don’t know where they have pulled that time out, they have had a big upgrade this weekend, obviously, and I just really wanted to deliver.
I really want to deliver for the fans. There are so many banners around the track and it means the world to me to have that support.”
