FIFTH ASHES TEST, Day 2 — Australia enters day two of the final Ashes Test of the summer full of confidence after finishing Thursday with a bang.
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood took key wickets to reduce England to 5-233 at stumps – exposing England’s tail and giving Australia a golden chance to take control of the fifth Test.
England were comfortably set at 3-220 when the new ball was taken late on day one – but within two overs the tourists had lost Joe Root (83) and Jonny Bairstow (5) in a horror ten-minute period.
Dawid Malan will resume on Friday morning not out on 55, with under-pressure all-rounder Moeen Ali to join him in the middle
It is the fourth time this series Root has fallen between 50 and 100 this series. The England captain Root brought up his half-century up in the 59th over, and looked set to cruise to a ton, picking up back-to-back boundaries off Mitchell Starc’s first two deliveries with the new ball. On the third he got a full toss on legstump and perished, with Mitchell Marsh taking a good catch down low at square leg.
